The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) offers each year a certification exam for undergraduate students currently enrolled in ASBMB-accredited programs. The results are an indication of how well the program is preparing students. Each year a number of UVA Chemistry’s Biochemistry undergraduates take the exam.
UVA had 19 students take the exam, which is optional and not required by the program. An outstanding 84% of UVA Chemistry students passed, while the national average was only 42% passing. In addition, 47% of our students were named distinguished, compared to the national average of 12%!
The number of UVA Chemistry students that took the exam increased in 2022 compared to 2021 from 14 to 19 students and the 47% of students that achieved certification with distinction almost doubled from the previous year's 27%.
Congratulations to the UVA Chemistry majors that excelled on this exam.
