What is your position and how long have you worked at UVA?
“I’m Chemistry’s Infrastructure Manager. I’m responsible for ensuring the department’s buildings are in operating condition. When there’s a building problem or need, I’m the interface between occupants and Facilities Management. I’m also in charge of Chemistry’s security which mostly involves ID swipe card access and issuing keys. I was hired by UVA in August of 2000 as an electrical apprentice with Facilities Management. I worked my way up through the ranks to become the McCormick Zone Maintenance Supervisor prior to transferring to Chemistry 4 years ago.”
What do you enjoy about working in UVA Chemistry?
“I take pride in all the research and education that is done in Chemistry. The small part I play contributes to the success of our researchers and students.
”What is a piece of advice that you would like to pass on to UVA students?
“Share what you learn, teach others your skills, and be the one who helps others in need. This will satisfy your soul and be your route to immortality.”
What activities do you enjoy outside of work?
“I’m an avid gamer and attend several boardgame conventions each year including PrezCon, which takes place right here in Charlottesville. I also enjoy model railroading. I have a track around the ceiling of my office that I can run a train on, as well as a display shelf full of trains, some dating back to 1934. If you ever want a break from the rigors of work and study, come by Chemistry 413 and I’d be happy to share my hobbies with you.”
